Hadrian's tomb, papal fortress, museum
Emperor Hadrian began the round building in AD 123 as a mausoleum for himself and his family. In the Middle Ages the popes turned it into a fortress and linked it to the Vatican by the Passetto di Borgo, a passage along the top of the city wall. Today the castle houses the Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo.
The route climbs the ancient ramp inside the building to the papal apartments and ends on the roof terrace below the bronze statue of the Archangel Michael. From there you look across the Tiber to St Peter's Basilica and the old town. Since June 2026 the Sale Farnesiane, including the Sala di Amore e Psiche, have reopened after restoration.

Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 7:30pm, last entry 6:30pm. Closed on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.

Around Easter, in July and August and in the weeks before Christmas, morning slots are often gone days in advance. Afternoons are quieter.

The castle and the Vatican are about ten minutes apart on foot. The combined ticket puts both entries into one booking: the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel, and Castel Sant'Angelo with an audio guide. You choose the two dates separately, on the same day or on two different days.

The Passetto di Borgo
This passage on top of the Leonine Wall links the Vatican with the castle. In 1527 Pope Clement VII escaped along it into the fortress while mercenary troops sacked Rome. It is open only from Friday to Sunday and only with a separate ticket, which includes entry to the castle.

From April to October and at weekends, yes, if you want to come in the morning. The queues at the ticket office are often long then. In winter and in the afternoon you can usually get in quickly without booking.
With the audio guide you go at your own pace and can stay on the roof terrace as long as you like. A tour is worth it if you want the full story from Hadrian to the popes and would like to ask questions. Tours are mainly in English and Italian.
